Root canals are not painful - they actually relieve tooth pain!
The first step in the root canal therapy process is a thorough examination of the affected tooth and surrounding area. Dr. Liel Allon of DentAllon Dentistry will visually inspect the tooth and may use special dental instruments to test the tooth's sensitivity. An X-ray will be taken to get a clear image of the tooth and surrounding bone. This allows Dr. Allon to assess the extent of the damage and plan the best approach for treatment.
After the initial examination, the area around the affected tooth is numbed using local anesthesia to ensure the patient's comfort throughout the procedure. Once the area is numb, Dr. Allon will make an opening in the crown of the tooth to access the pulp chamber. The damaged or diseased pulp is then carefully removed using special dental instruments.
With the diseased pulp removed, the next step is to clean and disinfect the empty pulp chamber and root canals. After thorough cleaning, the canals are filled with a biocompatible material called gutta-percha and sealed with dental cement to prevent future infection. A temporary filling is placed to close the opening on the tooth until a permanent restoration, like a crown, can be placed.
One of the primary benefits of root canal therapy is pain relief. An infected or inflamed tooth can cause severe and constant pain. Root canal therapy eliminates this pain by removing the source of the infection or inflammation - the tooth's pulp.
Root canal therapy is a tooth-saving procedure. It allows for the preservation of the natural tooth, which is always the best option for oral health. Keeping your natural tooth helps prevent other teeth from drifting out of line and causing jaw problems.
Root canal therapy is a straightforward procedure that can typically be completed in one to two visits to DentAllon Dentistry. Additionally, because it saves your natural tooth, it can be more cost-effective in the long run compared to alternative treatments like tooth extraction and replacement with a dental implant or bridge.
More than 15 million root canals are performed each year in the U.S. alone!
Dental sedation has been around for centuries.
Sedation dentistry has so many uses outside of causing patients to feel relaxed. Sedation also reduces gag reflex sensitivity which makes treatments on the rear molars easier to perform. Those with low pain tolerance can also benefit from sedation, as it reduces pain sensitivity.
Patients with severe dental anxiety are likely to avoid dental appointments and neglect necessary treatments. Sedation makes it easier for patients and the dentist to prevent serious oral health problems by reducing stress and memory associated with dental procedures.
Sedation is useful for children because they are likely to be apprehensive or scared of going to the dentist. Young children are less cooperative and in more complex or long procedures, this can be an issue. Some kids have difficulty holding their mouth open or sitting still for long procedures and sedation helps improve all of these conditions.
That you should NEVER use teeth to cut or open things.
